Донька Олександра Білаша розповіла цікаву історію цієї пісні. — У Градизьку на Полтавщині, звідки батько родом, ясени росли мало не на кожній вулиці. Та й по полтавській трасі їх було багато. Й от якось засіло у батька в голові: "Ясени, ясени, бачу вас за селом край дороги". Мелодія виникла раніше за пісню — так рідко буває. Батько товаришував з поетом Михайлом Ткачем, який часто бував у Градизьку. Дід і баба приймали його як рідного сина. Батько закрив Михайла Ткача в кімнаті у Ворзелі. Сказав, що не випустить, доки не напише вірша про ясени до вже готової мелодії. За якийсь час відчинив кімнату.
