1980 Space Sim | Star Raiders

'40 Years Ago' is a series of videos of games that were released 40 years ago. Doug Neubauer's 'Star Raiders' was released by Atari in 1980 for the Atari 800 home computer. This game is the 'missing link' between the classic Star Trek text games, and the 3D space sims like 'Elite' that came later in the 1980s. Compared to other games of the era, 'Star Raiders' is pretty sophisticated: It has 3D space flight, hyperspace jumps, star base docking, and space combat. And all of this in an 8K ROM! This game is commonly listed as having been released in 1979, but according to research on the AtariAge forums this seems to be wrong, and this game was actually released in March 1980:
