The King of Chicago (Amiga) - A Playguide and Review - by LemonAmiga.com
King of Chicago was released by Cinemaware in 1987; hot on the heels of their first game, DOTC. This is an interactive story about a 1920's gangster intent on taking over the old town of Chicago. Al Capone is in Leavenworth, which means the prize of becoming King Pin is up for grabs. I remember being blown away by The Last Ninja 2 on the 8 bit computers, for it's cut scenes and movie quality. On the Amiga we got quite a lot, mostly by Cinemaware. This takes a step deeper than Defender of the Crown, with a story which can change each time you play it. Sometimes coming down to moral choices or ways about doing things, and is a lot quicker to play then something like Wings or It Came From The Desert. I never had this back in the day, but the game is an old request from way back. I don't remember who requested it. The footage in the video was my second ever try at this game; - my first try being a quick warmup before I started the recorder rolling. Of course in my warmup I breezed through it, but in my actual play I got to appreciate the variety of dead ends and pitfalls on offer. This review was the penultimate one to be narrated for this series, the final one being Enemy: Tempest of Violence. Both of them were done in August and feel like ages ago, even though it was just 3 months. I made sure to mention the conversion in the narration, so that I could fill this area in with a Comparison Zone. But I wanted to include all five images I found from the internet of the conversions, and this mean't placing them in the top corner. I thought about recording some footage but it takes too long to record all those game just for a 20 seconds clip. So I used still images. They were going to be in Black and White, but as the Mac version is already in that mode, it seemed better to show them as they are. Danscore: Interactive stories with basic strategy and RPG elements are no stranger on The Amiga. Fans either love or hate them, and I never really got into any of them on a personal level apart from DOTC. This one feels even less interactive than that game, by the fact the arcade sequences are rather minimal. You get to use a bomb, or a Tommy gun, to gain your power - and if you have enough men in your personal army, you can absorb quite a few bullets in the firefights. The bomb is absolutely hit or miss, just like the financial side, and most of the plot points. The game is slick to play, and although I played this game in the intended NTSC mode, the game doesn't slow down very much with the same game running in Pal Land, due it most of it being on single screens. Music is minimal, and seems to have a random volume factor. Sound effects are basically a samples gun shot, explosion and a scream. It's very easy to see that most of the time was spent on the graphics, and the facial expressions definitely remind me of LA Noir. It has potential but not much replay value, so I can only give it 7 out of 10.
