[Longplay, No Commentary] Heavy Gear (PC, 1997) High difficulty 1080p Full Play-through
Heavy Gear is a first-person shooter vehicle-simulation game released in 1997 for Windows. Once again, humans are space-faring. This story sets on some fictional planet named Terra Nova where the Northern and Southern coalitions are having a major war with each other. You are a Gear pilot leader on the Northern side, fighting to survive against all odds. This is that other mecha game franchise from Activision after they lost their rights to the MechWarrior series. And it sucked gameplay-wise, to be completely honest. Instead of huge, clumsy mechs, you will be piloting the relatively light and nimble machines called Gears. This allowed fast-paced action to be natural in this game, which is not a bad thing on its own. However, the poor balancing of equipment and general AI performance kind of ruined the experience. There were 2 or 3 weapons that out-performed the rest by a significant margin, it was pointless to equip anything else unless you want to artificially bump up the difficulty to drag the game time. Squad mates were just there with no characteristic of their own, and they won't do anything other than literally watching your back unless explicitly told otherwise. Basically, there was nearly no strategic depth in the game. I think the only redeeming quality of this game was the story. I was actually invested in it thanks to the twists and turns. Also, there is always a special charm in those FMVs. Those BGMs in missions were also decent, gave off a bit of the same vibes as MechWarrior 2. After all, they were made by the same composer. I took the liberty to upscale those FMV cutscenes by 4X from the original, using a handy free program named Video2X. It was hard to do any wonders considering the original footages were in really low resolution, but at least the upscaled videos are no longer pixelated mess when forced to 1080p. Leave a rating and subscribe if you like for more videos in the future. Thanks for watching! ========== Useful link if you'd like to have a go yourself: Heavy Gear repacks - / heavy_gear_1_and_heavy_gear_2_pc_repacks_now (Just follow the steps included in the repack readme and your game should run fine. However for some reason, I couldn't get music to play when the included ISO was mounted. It was fixed by mounting the ISO gotten from MyAbandonware.)
