Amiga 500 Longplay [019] Castle Of Dr. Brain

Played by: Ironclaw I've never really played this game, only tried it once, many years ago. Opening the door, solving the sliding puzzle, never went to the second floor as I felt it would be a waste of time if I didn't record it at the same time, but the reason I never recorded this game (thus not playing it) was because of the clicking noises in the music and other parts. No matter what version of the emulator and game used, no matter what settings, it clicked. I thought maybe it IS like this on the real thing, but wasn't sure, so left the game alone. Tried it again recently as I've been away from Amiga emulation for a while. Several newer versions of the emulator has been released, so I tried the game again... still clicking sound and stuff, so... screw it, I'll record it now anyway and will finally play it Pfft. Yeah, yeah, people probably wonder why I just didn't play it before. I don't NEED to record to play, but I thought I would record it eventually and play THEN. I don't like playing through games twice, same with watching movies. I do most of the puzzles for the first time, no save states. I use save states on those I noticed take too long, so I could figure stuff out, load and then do it a bit faster (not too fast as that's not fun for the viewer (I think), so I take my time usually Grin). Like with most Sierra games on the Amiga (that has way more colors in the original version), they did a terrible color conversion job for a lot of the scenes. Some scenes only use about 20-25 colors, bah! Sure, a non AGA Amiga generally has 32 colors, so why didn't they use all? Some nice dithering could have done wonders with just 32 (I know, there's also HAM, but let's not talk about that). For the Amiga 1200, there are AGA with 256 colors. Could have done a perfect direct port, but not really, as this game was released in the same year as the 1200, according to a quick look at Google. It's weird how much slower some of the music plays compared to the PC version (not an emulation thingy, I'm sure). At 57:24 when that star stuff appears, the game crashed... every time. I was using the WHDLoad installed version. I thought maybe it was because of the common broken save states bug/incompatibility, but nope, saved the game, reset the Amiga, ran the game again, loaded the save, and tried opening the star thingy again... CRASH. So I downloaded the floppy version, placed the save on a disk, ran the floppy version, loaded the save... no crash when opening the star thingy. So, I replaced all the WHDLoad game files with the ones from the floppy, thinking maybe one of them were broken and tried the save again... CRASH, so, the WHDLoad version needs to be fixed at that spot (and maybe even later ones, donno as continued without WHDLoad). So, I copied the floppy files to the hard drive and ran it from there, without WHDLoad and it ran like a charm. So, there will be a slight hiccup at 00:56 (after about a half second), it's when I continue to play from the floppy version (yeah, I know the WHDLoad also is the floppy version) on the hard drive, not using the WHDLoad. Meh, had to say WHDLoad so many times, bleh. - Disclaimer: Most videos by World of Longplays use SaveStates!
