THE MONUMENTS OF MARS is a CGA platformer by Apogee Software and Scenerio Software released in 1991 for PC MS-DOS. It is split into four separate episodes. The first episode named "First Contact" was available for free as shareware, the other three had to be obtained via mail order. In the game, you are in control of a NASA astronaut who has to find a bunch of missing crew members after they went missing while exploring the dangerous monuments on Mars. THE MONUMENTS OF MARS is a classic platformer consisting of a number of single screen levels. In order to advance, you have to solve simple puzzles by using switches, strategically killing enemies and collecting keycards to access the exit of each level. Since supplies are sparse, you really want to pay extra attention to your ammo and only shoot enemies if you really have to. For some reason, I really loved this game when I was a kid. I really was into the graphics, aesthetics and the color palette. Every now and then, I still love to return to it and play through it as it is quick and non-frustrating fun. THE MONUMENTS OF MARS uses the same graphic engine as ARCTIC ADVENTURE and PHARAOH'S TOMB - two other platform games by Apogee. However, the controls and collision detection are highly improved and more precise in THE MONUMENTS OF MARS. This longplay shows all 20 levels of the first episode.
