This video was requested by Towerbridge04. I'd never heard of Typhoon Thompson, but the screenshots and reviews sounded interesting, so I was keen to take a look at this. Set adrift on a waterlogged planet, Typhoon Thompson is on a mission to rescue a shipwrecked child from mischievous Sea Sprites. Thompson is greeted by a pair of guardian spirits, who grant Thompson special powers and instruct him to retrieve various items from the Sea Sprites. To do this, the player must attack the Sea Sprites ships with the weapons given to him, then he must capture the stunned sprites as they fall into the water. The sprites don't stay stunned for long, so you must quickly drive over them to nab them in your sack. Once each sprite house has been cleared, you effectively ransom the head sprite for the required item in return for freeing his captured comrades. Each sprite ship has different abilities. Some will attempt to ram you, whilst others will dissolve you with acid. The most annoying ship of all is the vacuum, which sucks you towards it and destroys you on contact; I raged many times when trying to deal with these. The first few levels seem relatively simple, but the last two are extremely devious. You have to use your weapons to destroy one ship, attract the sprites with a magnet whilst freezing the other two ships in place. This gives you enough time to concentrate on capturing the sprites from the first ship before dealing with the other two. Controlling Thompson's ship requires good hand-eye coordination and a great deal of patience. Learning to handle the ship and capture the sprites whilst under pressure is a major part of the game. The graphics and sprite animations are extremely endearing and beautifully drawn for such small characters. The game is very charming and appeared to get very good reviews when it came out. My gameplay actually starts at 2:20 - anything prior to that is the attract mode. Typhoon Thompson is a quirky little game that also boasts some impressive physics, graphics and game mechanics, particularly considering it's year of release. #retrogaming
