I've been playing a fair bit of the game on PC, and I finally got around to checking out the Genesis version of Bitmap Bureau's alien blaster. It's a hard-core twin-stick shooter at heart, very much inspired by the likes of Smash TV and Robotron : 2084 - if you were a fan of those games, you'll likely enjoy Xeno Crisis. The objective is simple: navigate from room to room, wiping out alien scum and saving innocent civilians whilst en route to a showdown with the level boss. Dog tags collected from enemies act as a form of currency to upgrade gear and abilities at the end of each round, which you'll definitely need if you hope to make it to the end of the game. I think the one thing that is likely to be a problem for some players is the fact that, being a twin-stick game, you need to move and aim in different directions simultaneously. Playing the PC version with a PS4 or Xbox pad makes this simple, but trying to mimic this using D-Pad and buttons on a Genesis pad isn't so simple. I was playing this on an emulator, so I was able to remap the buttons to something my brain could cope with (arrow keys for movement and WASD for aiming), but players on real hardware might find it a bit awkward. On the plus side, the game features superb artwork and animation, and the whole package is really on par with the PC version. There are some minor differences, such as the lack of a dedicated UI panel for health and ammo, and the BFG weapon is absent, but this really doesn't make too much of a difference. I also felt there were slightly fewer enemies (and they took less bullets) than on PC, possibly to offset issues with the controller, but it's still an absolutely rock hard game.
