First mentioned in 1071 as Ust-Sheksna, the settlement was laid waste by the Mongol Hordes in the 13th century.... In later centuries, the settlement became a great trading post and was known as Rybnaya Slobodan. Catherine the Great granted Rybnaya Sloboda municipal rights and renamed it Rybinsk.
