Sonic & Knuckles Collection (ソニック＆ナックルズコレクション Sonikku to Nakkuruzu Korekushon?) is a Sonic the Hedgehog compilation game for Microsoft Windows-based personal computers. The collection includes: ✪ Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ✪ Sonic & Knuckles ✪ Sonic 3 & Knuckles ✪ Blue Sphere (in options dialog as "Special Stage Mode") The European and North American versions of the collection also include Sonic the Hedgehog The Screen Saver which the player can customize Windows with Sonic themes, wallpapers, icons, and music from Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles, and the Japanese soundtrack of Sonic CD. However, in Japan, Sonic & Knuckles Collection and Sonic the Screensaver were released separately on the same day. Most of the original music is faithfully converted to MIDI format, with the user able to choose between General MIDI and FM Synthesizer formats. Some of Sonic 3's music tracks, such as Carnival Night Zone, Ice Cap Zone, Launch Base Zone, Knuckles' theme, the Competition menu, and the credits music, were replaced with completely different tracks originally from the November 3rd, 1993 prototype of Sonic 3. Ice Cap Zone's soundtrack may have been replaced due to having its origins in Hard Times, an unreleased 1982 track by The Jetzons, an American new wave band whose keyboardist, Brad Buxer, later worked on the Sonic 3 soundtrack. Aside from this musical difference, the game plays virtually identically to its original incarnations. Other differences include the fact that the Sonic 3 & Knuckles Level Select Cheat works on Sonic 3 alone, in Angel Island Zone. This code (usually input at Mushroom Hill Zone in Sonic & Knuckles) does not enable debug mode as in the original, though it does still allow characters to play stages they couldn't access otherwise from the level select. Few examples can be Tails in Doomsday Zone and Knuckles in Sky Sanctuary 1. When the level select code is performed in Sonic 3, and the first Special Stage option is selected (which unlike in the original accesses the Blue Sphere mini-game), this enables the player to use Knuckles in the Sonic 3 levels, though they are incomplete and thus cannot always be beaten. = = = = = = = = = = Boy oh boy has it been YEARS since I last played the S&K Collection. Never thought I would considering how modern PCs can't exactly run old games like these very well. This collection here was one of the first set of games that really got me into the franchise as a kid (crazy I know), along with the very first videos I ever uploaded on the channel (specifically just Sonic 3 special stages). Thought of this as something to really make for throwback thursday. So many things to remember in the childhood days, from listening to the music a lot, to thinking that the insta-shield was useless, to playing the games super casual. I think this might be the first speedrun to ever be done on the collection. My notes on the run - I was going at an all emeralds run for the past few days just for fun, though I'm not gonna lie, aside from a few minor setbacks here, this felt like a really good run overall. What I do want to try and focus more on is practicing TAS strats in the special stages cause I definitely know I can pull it off, and know it helps with saving time. Thinking that Launch Base, and the final boss can be improvable, but a bright side was that everything else felt solid, and Carnival Night Act 1 was a new personal best record. To me it feels so weird having the jump key be just 1 button, but on genesis I'm now more use to doing a 3 tap for spindashing, something I learned from a lot of various runners.
