New Zealand Story Revolution Longplay (Nintendo DS) [4K]
Game Info --------------------------------------------------- Developer: Marvelous Entertainment Publisher: Ignition Entertainment Year of Release: 2007 Game Impressions --------------------------------------------------- A 20-year old coin-op game seems like a bit of an odd choice for what we'd now recognise as a remaster, particularly one as enigmatic as The New Zealand Story, but Marvelous prove there's still magic to be found, delivering a solid remaster for the DS console. The objective of the game is to assist Tiki the Kiwi in rescuing his friends from the clutches of a leopard seal with a predilection for kidnapping flightless birds. His adventures take across various levels supposedly set on the North and South islands of New Zealand, navigating maze-like levels atop balloons and inflatables hijacked from enemies. If all of that sounds a bit weird, it's because it is. The game makes little sense, but its sheer weirdness only makes it all the more endearing. This, plus the fact its a decent platformer, meant it got ported to a huge number of consoles and computers of the time. The developers introduced a number of new features, including: Ability to aim Tiki's bow with left shoulder button Ability to dash (double-tap stick) Touching enemies no longer harms Tiki Tiki can take multiple hits before dying (with the exception of lava and fireballs) There are also new features which make use of the DS touchscreen capabilities, although these are fairly perfunctory to the overall experience. I suppose if I have a complaint, it's the fact that the game is somewhat linear affair when compared to its coin-op forefather. Many of Taito's platform arcade games were famous for being more in-depth than they first appeared, and TNS was no exception. The game featured various hidden warp zones, which allowed you to skip certain levels, and it was even possible to access secret levels based on Heaven, which were required if you wanted to see the game's true ending. Although the DS version maintains the warps, the only way to unlock expert mode is to rescue all of kiwis from each of the game's levels; skipping ahead via warps isn't an option. This means bypassing Heaven completely, meaning one of the most enigmatic features of the original is somewhat side-lined. It's not a massive problem, but it makes New Zealand Story Revolution a more linear experience. Ultimately, if you're a fan of The New Zealand Story, I think you'd enjoy this. New Zealand Story is a solid reimagining of the arcade original, introducing quality-of-life updates and improvements to the graphics and audio, yet, crucially, remaining true to the original.
