Located on the southern slopes of the Meskheti Range of the Lower Caucasus, the town is known for three hyperthermic springs, slightly mineral in nature and rich in sulfate-sodium chloride. During the years belonging to the Russian Empire, from whence these photos originate, the town was popularised under the patronage of Mikhail Vorontsov, the Viceroy of the Caucasus. The development of the springs as a resort was due to Grand Duke Alexandrovich who retired here due to ill health and built a summer palace....
