Deadheat Scramble (Game Boy) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Electro Brain's 1990 racing game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Deadheat Scramble. Dead Heat Scramble was one of those random games that I had as a kid, but have absolutely no recall of how I got it. I had a couple of those - Penguin Wars is the other one that really sticks out in my mind. I think why I remember these two games so well is because, no matter how unlikely either was to become a favorite, they both stuck with me for a really long time for their simplicity and addictive gameplay. Dead Heat Scramble was, like the Game Boy games Popeye 2 and Fist of the North Star, developed by the virtually unknown Japanese developer Copya System. Just about all of their games have long since been forgotten and never got much recognition even in their day, but they all carry the some pretty great gameplay. This game was hard as a kid! It took me forever to figure out what all the little power-ups did (since I never had the manual), but once I got into it and started recognizing patterns, it was fairly smooth sailing. Pattern recognition is absolute key in the later stages - the action moves too fast to just blindly muddle through if you hope to get anywhere. The graphics look a bit fugly in still-shots, but for a game like this, I think that it's a good thing. With how badly the Game Boy screen blurs, you don't want too much detail obscuring the action: this one cut a pretty nice balance between clear, recognizable sprites and simple, well-defined backgrounds, so even on the smeary mess of 80s LCD technology that was the Game Boy's display, the game was still totally playable. Well, until you're batteries started dying, since as they drained, the contrast would typically go down the drain with them. Dead Heat Scramble a fun, short, simple title that hearkens back to the mid-80s arcade racing games, and that makes it perfect for a quick game on the go. _____ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
