Super Robot Wars 3 (1993, (Dai-3-Ji Super Robot Taisen), SNES/SFC English Gameplay 2020)

Super Robot Wars 3 (Dai-3-Ji Super Robot Taisen (第3次スーパーロボット大戦) is a Strategy Turn-Based RPG, released in 1993 for the SNES/SFC. It was developed by Winky Soft LTD, and published by Banpresto. It was initially Fan-Translated to English by Aeon Genesis in 2002 but an advanced patch was later released in 2019 reworking a LOT of the translation errors, left over bugs and issues. NOTE: I'm not a fan of Strategy RPG games so hopefully I can stay as non-biased as possible. STORY: 18/20 After destroying the hostile group known as the Divine Crusaders in SRW2 it seems not every one of them were taken down, they have returned. Disappearances has caused quite a stir withing the Earth Federation and an investigation team has been sent out to look into the claims that the Zabi Family are responsible. It seems that an alien invasion is imminent and the only group of Gundam Suit fighters able to protect and save humanity are the Londo Bell. The game's story goes even deeper than this and watching the Animes helps greatly here also though it's not necessary. The few actions that you are presented with throughout the game with path choices can alter the game's story greatly, so there's plenty of room for returning to play again to take different paths to see what happens. GRAPHICS: 15/20 The game's graphics are really nice in battles, very well animated and anime-like, but outside of battles it all looks a little PC strategy game-ish to me, you know.. the really old ones on DOS & Windows PCs. That aside, the graphics of the Gundam suits are all great and nicely colored, not one looks alike, and the graphics of attacks and stuff all look great considering it's a SNES/SFC game. The stats screens look great, full of information about each suit in your party, a nice menu design over all to suit the game. MUSIC: 14/20 This game has a massive 36 track OST, an incredible amount more than the 2nd game, and most of these tracks are original to this game also, rather than just copy and pasted over, unlike what the 4th game does from this one. Each track is pretty nice though the main longer ambient music tracks seem to be within the battlefield themselves due to the time taken to decide moves, and the shorter, faster and fast paced tracks are the ones that play in battle. The game has a ton of sound effects for things such as all the different weapon types, lasers, missiles, machine guns, punching, weapons, dying, explosions, etc.. there's just a ton here. With everything said above, is there any track that really stands out as a fantastic OST? not really, they get old very quick because of the time taken to get through each chapter. GAMEPLAY: 15/20 Built around team management this game seems to be quite hard in terms of trying to level your team to be any use to you later on. A lot of people would try and play in the style of how you would if playing a Fire Emblem game.. you know.. mass level your weak units so you can get them to be OP later in the game, THAT is a huge mistake here. Many of your main Gundam members will leave your party, come back, some don't even return so stay clear of your crappy low units and only level the main Gundam units such as Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Gundam, Amuro, Kou, and Judau. You later get chances to recruit better Gundams so you don't have to use the crappy low level units, so ones like Combattler V, and Raideen become available later, those are worth getting and training. Battling takes a bit of learning, the uses of Guts, spirit commands and such take a while to get used to and understand, I recommend looking up a guide for those, otherwise you'll find you might lost within it all, it's a complex system, especially when upgrading units. TRANSLATION: 17/20 The earlier 2002 translation was a mess, wrong names given for characters, skill moves, and such but since the 2019 patch things got fixed and fits more inline with the Gundam EX game and the Animes. Now, this English patch translation is a great piece of work BUT there's still issues with text overflow in menus and such so whilst the translation may be great the entirety of it ain't perfect, to which this is reflected in my score. OVER ALL: 78/100 This is a game where planning ahead comes in use, if you don't manage your money and experience on your best units and waste it on crap units you will come to find you will get stuck later, so don't waste time on the useless units, stick with the real Gundam Units. Would I recommend this game now? certainly, if you are a SRW fan, if you are not then be prepared to do a lot of information searching on the internet so you can play the game effectively, unlike me that just dove right in for this video. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have you played this game?
