Red Baron (16-color version) • Dynamix 1990 - check description for some goodies!
Red Baron was developed by Dynamix and released by Sierra in 1990. It's a classic flight sim depicting aerial combat in World War I. It was revolutionary back when it came out. It featured good 3d graphics, really well made FM sound (those gun shots sound nice even today) and solid gameplay - single missions, historic missions and fully featured career mode that let you roleplay to your heart content. You would get news from the front in form of a newspaper - you could even be a part of the article when you became an ace. You could earn medals, if you ditch behing enemy lines you would spend some time as POW before escaping which would "fast-forward" few months in your career. After some time you would be promoted to higher rank, in which case you could customize your aircraft, apply for better one or even transfer to different squadron if you get bored with the setting. The front was divided in 5 maps, which came on paper with the game and its hefty manual. You could use the maps for navigation - when set to real, otherwise you would get sector information display during flight. The gameplay difficulty was scalable, with the ability to set many options to real or simplified setting. After the success of Red Baron, Damon Slye went on to design Aces of the Pacific and Aces Over Europe which used the same game engine and borrowed a lot of ideas from Red Baron. This game (though 256-color version which was a part of compilation along with A-10 Tank Killer 1.5 on single CD) was actually my first game that I installed on my new PC when I switched from Amiga 500 back in 1995, and I played it to death. This 16-color version was re-released as freeware in 1997 to promote and make amends for late release of Red Baron II. I prepared portable version built with DOSBox ECE, which you can DOWNLOAD HERE: Just unpack it where you like, and run REDBARON.exe 0:00 Intro and credits 0:54 Career 1:29 Mission assignment 1:57 Mission start 10:28 Back at aerodrome 10:45 View German airplanes 11:34 View RFC airplanes 12:41 Quick look at the aces 13:40 Historic mission - Hawker vs Richthofen #RetroFlightSims
