Unlike its spinoff sister title, Rune Factory Frontier, which presents a sequel story to the first DS game, Rune Factory Oceans introduces a completely new cast and setting for its story, as well as novel gameplay elements never before seen in the series. Rune Factory is a series of fantasy adventure role-playing video games that feature elements of farming, dungeons, romance, crafting, and more. In "Rune Factory Oceans,” two childhood friends from Fenith Island, at the time guarded by an overabundance of powerful archdragons, encounter a mysterious light that transports them to a Fenith Island 200 years in the future, where only a single sky guardian remains. Stolen as they were from their place in time, the two discover the girl's body is suddenly nowhere to be found, with her soul now incidentally sharing the body of her best friend. Despite their predicament, the three dragon priestess sisters of the Fenith Island at present welcome the protagonist duo into a new home, where they abruptly become masters to a giant plant golem capable of scouring the seas for clues regarding their time-slip enigma.
