I was there at the military training camp together with Vladimir Kostrov. Local residents told us a story that during the war the German fascists shot Jews from the ghetto and buried the dead in the ground at this place. In Soviet times a lake was poured in here. And there, in front of us, they boated and had fun. Kostrov suddenly got indignant, broke his fishing rod and said: “I can’t fish here!” And then I wrote these poems, and then Marc Chagall made illustrations for them" (Andrey Voznesensky)
