The group’s repertoire spans a wide range of musical styles, with a focus on arrangements of traditional Ukrainian folk songs, works by Ukrainian composers, and their own original compositions. History The Cheremshyna Ensemble was formed in 1977 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada by musicians of Ukrainian descent. In its early years, Cheremshyna began as a female vocal trio consisting of Klavdiya Melnyk, Lidia Rudych, and Nadiya Tsvitkov. In 1981, the trio released its first studio album, “Sviato Rizdva” (Christmas Celebration), recorded at Yevshan Records. During these tours, musicians Marko Bednarchuk and Vasyl Kinal joined the group as accompanists, enriching the ensemble’s sound and performance style. Cheremshyna went on to perform at numerous Ukrainian festivals and cultural events throughout North and South America. Their recordings became highly popular not only among the Ukrainian diaspora but also among folk music enthusiasts across continents, including audiences in their ancestral homeland — Ukraine. In 1990, while recording the album “The Best of Cheremshyna,” the group welcomed accordionist Roman Kohut, further expanding its musical range. Cheremshyna was invited to many distinguished events, including: A concert at the Centennial Concert Hall in Winnipeg, Manitoba A Christmas performance at the residence of the Governor General of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario Discography Over the years, Cheremshyna has released six albums, five of which were recorded at Yevshan Records between 1981 and 1990.
