WWF Betrayal (Game Boy Color) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of THQ's license-based beat 'em up for the Nintendo Game Boy Color, WWF Betrayal. Played through as The Rock. The final WWF game for the Game Boy Color marks a short-lived, albeit welcome departure from the standard "simulation" of TV wrestling that nearly every game bearing the WWF license went for beforehand. Rather than being a wrestling game, it's a beat 'em up! Resembling Final Fight or Double Dragon, WWF Betrayal allows you to pick from Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, The Rock, or The Undertaker in one of the most ridiculous storylines imaginable. It's actually based on a TV story, so that should indicate the level of histrionics on display: Stephanie McMahon goes missing, and Vince arrives, offering your chosen wrestler a shot at the championship if they go after and save her. There's more to it, of course, and all of it melodramatic, but even though this isn't Shakespeare, I don't want to ruin the absurd plot if you haven't played it before. It wasn't rated terribly well when it came out, but I actually liked it quite a bit. The graphics are big and clear, and the cinematics are all pretty entertaining and over-the-top (hence the thumbnail showing Steve Austin and The Undertaker stuffing Stephanie McMahon in the trunk of a limo!), and the controls are quite easy to get used to. It's not terribly complex - the move set is fairly limited - but it does it's job well enough, keeping the play simple but fast-paced and entertaining. The bets bits in my mind definitely involved the weapons (spanners, rebars and the like) and the finishing moves. The game is quite short and easy, so there's not a ton of value here, but for what it is - a WWF-licensed throwback to the 8 and 16-bit arcade brawlers - it serves just fine. I suppose that's fitting, since it was developed by WayForward, years before they trended toward retro remakes/tributes like DuckTales Remastered, Double Dragon Neon, and A Boy and His Blob. ____ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
