Discord:   / discord   "The Red Army is the Strongest" is a popular song composed by Samuil Pokrass (1897-1939), with lyrics by Pavel Grigorev (1895-1961). It was written during the Russian Civil War as an anthem for the Red Army. The song is also known by its first line, "White Army, Black Baron" (Белая Армия, Чëрный Барон). "Black Baron" was a nickname for Baron Pyotr Wrangel, the commanding general of the White Army. Wrangel was known to wear black uniforms. Prior to 1937, the song was published under various titles, including "From the Taiga to the British Seas" (От тайги до британских морей) and "Red Army" (Красная Армия). In Austria, the tune was used for the song "Die Arbeiter von Wien" (The Workers of Vienna). The tune was also used for a Yugoslav song called "Demokratska NATO Armija" (Democratic NATO Army). There are many other versions of the song, including a variant sung by communists in Weimar Germany.
