Dragon Ball Z - Super Gokuden: Totsugeki-Hen (1995, SNES/SFC English Gameplay 2020)
Dragon Ball Z - Super Gokuden: Totsugeki-Hen is a Timed-Action RPG for the Super Nintendo/Famicom. It was released in 1995 and is the first in the Dragon Ball Z games for that system. The game was developed by TOSE Software Co. and published by Bandai. The game was fan-translated by SO! having spent not enough time in this game, but decided to look further into it by watching other gameplay videos, what did I think? let's see.. STORY: 14/20 This game follows the story arc of Dragon Ball Anime, right from the beginning up to the point where you fight King Piccolo at the end, that's all I can really say on this other than it's quite an interesting story from the Anime perspective, as a game? not so much. GRAPHICS: 18/20 The game's graphics to me seem much better than the next game in the series, this one seems more colorful and detailed, especially the world map that you traverse during the game. Attacks are nicely animated and pictures used in cutscenes are all very noticeable and easy to see who they are meant to be, such as Goku, Bulma, etc. Unfortunately I couldn't see much more of theg ame because of buttons just not working so this rating is based on what I DID see. SOUND: 20/20 The game's music is very impressive, and it has quite a few tracks to accompany each section of the game. All mostly upbeat and fun, you will certainly feel like you are in the D.B. Anime universe. Sound effects are okay, usual sounds for punches, kicks, other skills, etc, monsters encounters, and there's even sound effects used between battles to accompany the game's story, such as vehicles, people talking, etc. This category is very impressive for a SNES/SFC game. GAMEPLAY: 6/20 This game, like the next one in the series has a rock-paper-scissors formula but it's timed, you miss your attack and more often than not you will not be able to block or attack again because the timing of you being able to use your skills suck ass, so expect wipes. There's not really much in way of gameplay to be honest other than read the story and cutscenes, and then take on the small battle that takes place after it, then repeat. Holding L and R will charge Ki to allow Goku to move/react faster, and allow him to later use skills like his trademark.. Kamehameha!. Each button does some type of attack that will be useful against another type of attack that the enemy may use, and you are supposed to be able to defend BUT I really couldn't figure out what button was defend, hence me dying and giving up, i'm really not a fan of this type of formula for RPG games. There are small times when you can make choices but these just seem to have no real effect if you choose wrong other than the dialogue changes slightly. So as it stands, the game don't really have much in the way of gameplay other than reading and do 1 battle to move the story forward every now and then, oh and maybe choose an option out of usually 3 choices that changes dialogue sometimes. SYSTEMS: 8/20 Well, there's not really much in this game at all, there's a choice system to change dialogue in game that can sometimes result in small changes but these choices mainly follow the Anime as a whole, so choose correctly. A defend/attack system with limited skills to choose from depending on what button is pressed for attacking. A charging system by holding L and R where it allows Goku to attack quicker, stronger moves like his Kamehameha! move and even react quicker with the battles in general. TRANSLATION: 17/20 The game's translation is nice, whilst there's no errors I think sometimes the dialogue feels a little empty. Sometimes the characters feel like how they are in the Anime but then sometimes they don't seem like them what so ever. This is due to the translator's writing I think rather than actual game's dialogue, things like this can't be helped though at times with translations, things do tend to get lost. SO! it's not a bad translation, it's certainly playable right through to the end but there's still a few things that's left untranslated graphically. OVER ALL: 83/100 (that's higher than expected) It's not as bad as the next game in the series but trying to choose the correct skill to counter the enemy's skill is a total pain in the ass and it just falls to trial and error, and pure luck that you choose a skill that will counter the one used by the enemy. Do I recommend this game? only if you are a Dragon Ball fan, if not then stay clear.. especially if you have low patience. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Have you played this game?
