The Manhole (1988)

This is the original Macintosh floppy version of Cyan's first game, an adventure game for children called The Manhole. It was created by brothers Rand and Robyn Miller of "Myst" fame, and released for the Mac's HyperCard software in 1988. It is running here on System 3.0 and HyperCard 1.01. The game was re-released on CD-ROM by Activision one year later, with additional Redbook music tracks. It saw ports with colour graphics to MS-DOS (1989), Fujitsu FM Towns (1990), and NEC PC Engine CD (1991), the latter two with a choice of Japanese or English texts and voices. An improved edition titled "The Manhole: New and Enhanced" was released for MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 in 1992. The heavily extended CD-ROM Masterpiece Edition with pre-rendered 3D graphics in the style of Myst was released for Windows and Macintosh in 1995. Cyan would create two more adventure games for children—"Cosmic Osmo and the Worlds Beyond the Mackerel" and "Spelunx and the Caves of Mr. Seudo"—before landing their smash hit "Myst" in September 1993.
