Although Hovertank (or Hovertank 3D) is technically a vehicular shooter it was a direct forerunner of Id's Catacomb 3D and the seminal FPS, Wolfenstein 3D. It also feels like an FPS, with a maze to traverse, stuff to collect (people) and lots of monsters to shoot. In fact, if the title didn't mention tanks, you'd swear your player character was on foot. Hovertank certainly deserves more recognition, it's a fast-paced, fun game, if perhaps a little short, and more importantly, the sound effects were provided vocally by John Romero himself.
