Classic TV Theme: ABC's Wide World of Sports

Sports shows aren't exactly the genre we deal with here, but a lot of US tv viewers of a certain age grew up with 'Wide World of Sports'. It ran for decades on ABC (1961-1998) and the title was used sporadically after that for special events. Hosted by Jim McKay, it was a showcase for ABC's 'up close and personal' approach that served as prep for ABC's groundbreaking Olympics coverage. (McKay, also ABC's lead Olympics host, would win an Emmy for his memorable coverage of the 1972 Munich massacre.) Wide World's iconic theme music is by Charles Fox ('Love Boat', 'Happy Days', and Emmy-winning 'Love, American Style'). 00:00 An early opening sequence used animation and film clips as the show had not yet built up its library of spectacular sports moments. 01:07 A 70's intro. You'll hear more of the theme as we used a track without the sponsor announcements. 02:13 Opening titles from the 80s. hat-tips: @CalvinWalker2000 @MediaAssetsCenter @stevenwalsh7705
