The city is located in the far south of Jiangsu province, lying in between the cities of Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangzhou. Yixing's urban area is also rich in lakes, with the San Jiu lake formation, comprising East Lake, West Lake. The city was known for its pottery, and it was known as the "Ceramics Capital of China".
