I just tried out the prototype responsive acoustics recorder I got from a colleague at a conference. It’s pretty amazing — it can pick up responsive acoustics that normal equipment can’t capture. These organisms use responsive acoustics for communication, territory marking, courtship, and even hypnotizing or weakening prey. These sounds go beyond normal auditory signals, directly affecting the listener’s nervous system and altering mental states. We predict these acoustics also affect terrestrial humans and collect experimental data through this YouTube channel. So far, they have been observed to trigger responses similar to Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) in humans, but their full psychological impact is unknown.
