I first played this game in 1988 on the Apple IIc, Battletech was ported to many different computer platforms, like the C64, Apple II, Atari ST, Amiga 500, and the MS-DOS. I played the Apple II, and later the MS-DOS version in 1991. The MS-DOS version and the Amiga versions are very similar in terms of graphics, there wasn't much of a difference. The Apple II and C64 versions didn't have good graphics being 8 bit computers. This game came with one floppy disk, it could be a 5.25", or a 3.5" floppy disk. It came with a manual, a reference card, weapons recognition guide, and a poster. It came with a lot of stuff. The format of this game is like most RPG games of the time, like Ultima, and Final Fantasy. You move around in a isometric map, and you gain experience points. The game play has changed over the years, but the format has not changed. Even in games like Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, you have experience points, and that determines how proficient you will be with the weapons you are using. You also gain experience points as you slay more enemies and complete quests. The only way to play this game, like all RPG games is to follow the story line. By following the story, it can help you get everything you need to finish the game. In this game, your name is Jason Youngblood who was the son of a famous LAM mech pilot, and you are in cadet school to become a mechwarrior of the Lyran Commonwealth. All of that gets disrupted when the forces of House of Kurita invades Pacifica, so everything goes into disarray and chaos for you. On your last training mission, the forces of Kurita assault the Citadel(Academy), and you have to escape. From there, your quest starts to looking for your father. There are no hints of where you should go after this, like Fallout 3. You just explore the map and find places by random. In Fallout 3 you find the town of Megaton, and in this game you find the Star Port which is northwest of where you are. You go to the Star Port to find clues of where your father might be, like checking hospital records, etc. Your quest starts from there, and it leads you to the Star League Cache where you find a way to communicate with Katrina Steiner to rescue you and salvage the technology you discovered. The Star League was the Federation that ruled the Inner Sphere before it fragmented into 5 Houses or 5 warring factions. A lot of the technology got lost due to these succession wars; however, the Star League did leave caches of equipment in different planets in the Inner Sphere. Finishing the game doesn't lead to you finding your father, because he was captured by the Kuritan forces when they invaded Pacifica. You will find your father in the sequel to this game, Battletech: The Crescent Hawk's Revenge. This game was different from the first game; in that, it was a real time military strategy game developed by Westwood Associates. Westwood Associates would make the first popular real time strategy game which came in the form of Command & Conquer in 1995. This game was fun, and it was like reading a interactive novel. Infocom was known for making text based games, like the Zork series. They also made other story based games, like Circuit's Edge which was another great game by Infocom. These games didn't have a lot of graphics, or great animations. Never the less, they were great games, because they were fun and engaging. I really got into this game, and spent hours on it back in 1988. ▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄ [Links] ♠ Battletech Game •
