This international tradition, with no ties to Islamic customs, marks the first day of the Iranian calendar, coinciding with the day of Uraz in the month of Farvardin. As the equinox brings about a balance of day and night, Nowruz symbolizes the dawn of a season ripe with growth and prosperity. Translated from Persian, "Nowruz" literally means "new day," underlining the essence of fresh beginnings. In Central Asia, a specific dish is always prepared for Nowruz - sumalyak. In ancient time, a destitute mother and her two children faced hunger with no bread in sight. Overcome by their tears, the mother concocted a mixture of water, river pebbles, herbs, and sprouted wheat. She cooked it through the night, whispering promises of food to her children. As dawn broke, she found the mixture transformed into a jam-like substance. The children, revitalized by this unexpected meal, dubbed it "sumalyak" or "angel water," believing an angel had blessed their humble fare. Today we will look at the celebration of Nowruz and ordinary daily life during the Muslim fast of Uraza in the most traditionally colorful place of Kyrgyzstan - Batken region.
