APOLLO 18 - Landing at Schröter's Valley in 1972 (Simulation, Cancelled Apollo Mission)

Landing of Apollo 18 at Schröter's Valley, with real 3D terrain. This was simulated in Orbiter Space Flight Simulator with the AMSO Apollo add-on. High resolution terrain textures are from the LROC mission, converted by RetroSpace HD. According to "NASA OMSF, Manned Space Flight Weekly Report" dated July 28, 1969, Apollo 18 would have landed at Schröter's Valley in February 1972. The actual landing site was not specified. For this simulation a flat location was chosen, halfway between the valley floor and the plains, near the Cobra's Head feature:
A possible crew might have included: » Richard Gordon (Commander (CDR)) » Vance Brand (Command Module Pilot (CMP)) » Don Lind (Lunar Module Pilot (LMP)) Schröter's Valley (Vallis Schröteri), is a sinuous valley or rille on the surface of the near side of the Moon. It is located on a rise of continental ground, sometimes called the Aristarchus plateau. At the southern edge of this rise are the craters Aristarchus and Herodotus. The origins of this rille are believed to be volcanic. The interior floor has been resurfaced and is very level. ========================================= A special thanks to the channel supporters (   / retrospacehd   ): Gary Smith Ryan Hardy Scott Manley Bill Hurley ======================================== #apollo18 #nasa #moon #apollomissions
