Manufacturer: Carl Zeiss, Jena (Germany) Application: Civil Era: 1980s Magnification: 10x Objective Lens Size: 50mm Field of View: 7.3° - 128m at 1000m Specifics: After WW1, the Zeiss factory in Jena produced the first wide-angle binoculars. This also included the Dekaris 10x50 as the individual focus version, which was mass-produced from around 1929 and the Dekarem 10x50 as the center focus version, which was mass-produced from around 1931. Both versions have a field of view of 128m at 1000m, which corresponds to 7.3°. The Dekaris/Dekarem was manufactured by Carl Zeiss Jena until 1990 and then for a few more years by the successor company Docter Optic. It is therefore one of the absolute classics of Zeiss binoculars. Around the beginning of the 1970s Zeiss started building the main production lines (Deltrintem/Binoctem/Dekarem) as Jenoptem versions. Much is written about which series is the better. Some say the Dekarem is better, some the Jenoptem 10x50, some say there are no differences at all. However, from 1978 onwards, with the introduction of multi-layer coatings (MC-Coating), there was a change that played a major role in terms of the optical performance of the binoculars. However, that doesn't mean that the versions with the MC-Coatings are necessarily the better ones, since the advantages of modern coatings only really come into play under unfavorable conditions. The first versions of the Zeiss 10x50 are still very well suited for daytime observation and relatively normal visibility.
