Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of LJN's 1991 NES game, Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure. So Bill & Ted. Sigh. I absolutely adore the movies (especially Excellent Adventure) and still watch them pretty regularly. But, I have to ask - did anyone ever think that a Bill & Ted game would be something that they'd actually want? It really never struck me as a film well-suited to a video game adaptation - at least, not an 8-bit one. Maybe in modern 3D it would be cool, but... oh dear. You really can't fault the designers for the ambition here - it sounds good in theory. You skip around different eras, looking for famous "personages of historical significance", searching for items to convince the celeb to come with you so that you can get back to San Dimas, get your A, and become rock stars. The problem is that they went for a Zelda-style of exploration with short bits of exposition, and something went horribly awry in the process. The only way to find many of the necessary objects is to jump on random places in the background. Thankfully after playing enough times you come to learn the spots where they're most likely to appear, but things can be extremely mind-numbing until you figure them out. Not helping matters is that the controls are really loose and slippery feeling, and everytime you jump into a bush/plant/fence to look for an object, you fall flat on your rear-end, and are forced to watch an annoyingly long, unskippable animation of a stunned Bill or Ted shaking his head and "brushing it off". The graphics are nice enough - they've got plenty of detail despite how often they're repeated, and the digitized photos of the heroes are surprisingly clear and do a good job of conveying facial expressions. The writing is also surprisingly good, often sprinkling classic lines from the film in the dialogue. As much as I've always wanted to like this game, I can't in good conscience recommend it to anyone that doesn't have a pair of rose-tinted glasses to view it through. There's some fun here, but it's buried far too well beneath the poor mechanics to make it worth dredging out. As Biff McTannen might say, "I hate manure!" This is a reupload of an older video that was only encoded at 480p. I found my original source footage and have now upscaled it so it's now MUCH cleaner and runs at 60fps. _______ No cheats were used during the recording of this video. NintendoComplete (
