Round 1 is the most challenging part, as luck plays the biggest role compared to the other two rounds. That said, as long as you can complete the first round with three lives left you have a very good chance of completing the level, and with my method, you can even complete it with just two men left. The key is not to use the loss of a life as part of the strategy of completing it. As not only by losing a life at specific times will the enemy cycles reset to your advantage, but if you plan ahead, you can also take advantage of the spawn location to complete a round more quickly. I used the exact same technique as I did in this video for all three challenges (completion, time, and score). And was able to do them all with only a few retries. However, luck still plays a huge roll, so so I understand why this level can be frustrating.
