Virtua Racing (Genesis) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Sega's 1994 3D racing game for the Sega Genesis, Virtua Racing. This video shows a first-place win on each of the three courses: 1:12 Beginner course, Big Forest 6:10 Medium course, Bay Bridge 10:53 Expert course, Acropolis I always liked Virtua Racing. I played the classic Model 1 arcade version CONSTANTLY as a kid at the mall just down the street from where I lived, and this Genesis version was actually a bit of a disappointment to me at the time. It's a massive achievement for a 16-bit game, even if it required the built-in math coprocessor to boost the Genesis's power enough to handle all the 3D, (the SVP - Sega Virtua Processor) and all at a steal at the low, low price of $99/£70 - for a racing game with three tracks in it. The only other US game I recall at the time costing as much was Sega's RPG from around the same time, Phantasy Star IV. It might not have had super flashy 3D, but it was a good, lengthy RPG, which made the price tag sting (slightly) less. Its 3D was significantly faster and smoother than Stunt Race FX for the SNES, and it played fairly well. The only real problem was that, unlike the Nintendo 3D titles, Sega's title suffered pretty horrendously in comparison to the popular arcade game. Maybe with an original game for the home console, people would have viewed it better, but then, Sega had already begun down its slippery-slope downward by the time it came out. It's actually easier to appreciate this for what it really represents now in hindsight, but if you want a home version on a "retro" console, go for the 32X port. It's like night-and-day to this for how closely it hits the arcade's high mark. I also freely admit that I'm not that awesome at Virtua Racing. I was reasonably good at the arcade version, and less so at this Genesis port, but I'm still good enough to not run out of time and to finish in first for each race. Oh well. I suppose that's a vague warning - if you're looking for a pro playing the game, you probably want a different video. :) ______ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
