Madden 64 (N64)

Classic Madden has been doing numbers here on the channel so I figured why not run it back with another oddity. What makes this one odd you ask? Well for some reason this game actually isn't licensed by the NFL so no actual team names can be used and instead are only called by their city name and an approximate of the uniform. No logos whatsoever. It *is* however endorsed by the NFLPA so actual player names are correct which I find incredibly interesting that they could secure colors, cities, and actual player names but couldn't close the deal with the NFL to get logos and names. As should be expected in the early days of 3d Madden this one is a little rough around the edges. Color commentary provided by Pat Summerall and John Madden exists but is very sparse. Play calling is very simplified both on offense and defense (to be honest I feel like the SNES had more elaborate play calling). Passing feels like an absolute coinflip. Receivers would sometimes run incorrect routes, stop routes short, not contend for the ball against the DB, or sometimes QB accuracy would just be miles off even with planted delivery. Screen and flare passes seemed overly strong at least against the cpu that wouldn't cover for it and over commit the blitz. It does have the cartridge advantage of nonexistent load times so going through menus and getting into and out of a game is lightning fast, but as would be the case with a lot of n64 games space on the cart becomes an issue and cuts have to be made. Madden 64 is decent enough to play but serves more as a fun oddity than one to go back and repeat play. #madden #nfl #n64
