Amiga Longplay Slightly Magic

Played by: Bag of Magic Food Yet another platformer adventure from CodeMasters. Why did they ever stop making these? This game stars a not-so-famous boy wizard named Slightly who sets off to rescue Princess Croak from a sunburnt dragon while Slightly's uncle is away. Not only will he carry objects to where they are needed to reach new objects, but often it is also necessary to combine pairs of related items to create an active spell. Finding both the wand and the spellbook gives you a magic meter that allows these spells to work, which is drained by contact with enemies and by using transformation spells. Running out of magic means losing a life, so in making a no-deaths run I had to conserve the meter as well as avoid instant death traps like fire and spikes! The Amiga conversion is, as usual, quite a bit easier than the Spectrum original, offering more fluid jump control, expanding the inventory to a whopping 5 spaces, and removing a few of the cheap kills like the banana skins. That makes it a fairer challenge, but it also means you may end up solving the game to completion a little too quickly. All the puzzles are there, though! The graphics may not be very impressive for an Amiga game, but the Amiga version does sport an extended ending, more music, a great number of speech samples, and more enemies and animations than the stripped-down Atari ST version. I took my time in some places when I could have sped through, in order to show more messages or listen to the music a little longer. - Disclaimer: Most videos by World of Longplays use SaveStates!
