Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 27: Panzer Dragoon/Arranged mode
I crudely edited in the English subtitles from the English version of the game, as this was only released in Japan. Overall it's a decent version of the game the graphical improvements are really meh. The models look really rough even the ones they re-done I actually prefer they didn't do anything with them at all. And the game still runs in 240p !? WHY why not put it in 480i at least. Also this draw distance is exactly like in all other versions. For some reason they thought it was a good idea to put the super ugly FMV's in 480i (which is the reason why it cuts out on a few occasions), while also stretching and blurring them out to cover for all the ugly encoding ... But in the end it looks even uglier than it did on the Saturn. Not to mention the dreadful framerate of 20. I'm assuming that because of how this game's framelocked and synced to music it would take allot of effort to re-sync and re-adjust the animations to still fit with the music. I have read just how much trouble it was to make this run in 20 frames on the Saturn so they probably couldn't have done it anew without re-doing it completely. What they could have done maybe was to use the engine from Orta or zwei (whichever one would be more compatible with the PS2) and just re create levels there for the arranged mode. But the inclusion of Pandora's box is really nice. What it does in this version it pretty much provides you with the stuff you'd have to use cheatcodes to get. Stage select also becomes available as you reach a new level (so say you beat level 3 get to level 4, you can start from level 4 next time you play). Also this is WAY better than playing the western release of the Saturn version cause there is no spiked difficulty (unless you set it to be so). The easy mode is actually easier as in you can beat level 5 (what I did here after my continues ran out) without making you want to eat your face in frustration. A bit of a shame this doesn't have the same amount of effort put into it as the Nights on PS2 or Phantasy Star Generations. Or that the far superior Panzer Dragoon Zwei never made it to anything different than the Saturn.
