Battle Arena Toshinden Remix (Saturn) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of Sega's 1996 versus fighter for the Sega Saturn, Battle Arena Toshinden Remix. Played through the story mode with Sofia on the hard difficulty level. The Saturn edition of Toshinden provides an interesting conundrum. It was one of the main games to prove the power of the PlayStation to the public already the prior year, and comparing solely on technical merits, it is still the superior version. It also was among the chief rivals to Virtua Fighter at the time - it's odd that they ever ported it. TSD2 got a port too! The PlayStation version ran at a higher framerate and had higher polygon-count models. While that might sound like it makes the choice an easy one, don't be too quick to dismiss "Remix." They still provide pretty comparable experiences. The Saturn version, however, features better quality texturing and more detail, even running at a lower resolution than the original PS1 version. It also doesn't suffer from a lack of Z-buffering like the PS1 version did - Eiji's stage in particular now looks much better as a result. It's got the new story mode included - the mode I played in this video - it adds all sorts of ancillary window-dressing which, though incredibly amusing, doesn't really change the overall experience too much. It's an attempt to string together a reason for each fight, but it's hard to feel too engaged with talking heads with terrible accents. And, this might be terrible of me to say, but does Sofia strike anyone as...different...(?) than they imagined her playing the original game? I mean, she always struck me as a bit slutty but kinda hot and dangerous - at least, that's what I thought the character designers were going for. But between this one's obnoxious story representation and how manky she looks in the FMV intro to Toshinden 2, ewww. I don't like Sofia so much anymore. I see her and I imagine needing Valtrex before kayaking or riding a bicycle. It's an unfortunate image. So, back to the Saturn Toshinden. The music is the same and still streamed, and the game plays the same as the original did. For as terribly produced as the new stuff is (including a character that only ever appeared in this game), I really enjoyed this one. It feels more substantial than the original release, the FMV is really satisfyingly cheesy, and it's certainly got personality... however you want to qualify that. I mean, Sofia now sounds like a man on horomone therapy when s/he says, "Anytime, anywhere." It's good for a laugh! I give it a thumbs up. You aren't losing much by playing the Saturn version of the PS1 - I think you're actually gaining with the extra content. It really depends on how much the graphics mean to you. ___ No cheats were used during the recording of this video. NintendoComplete (
