Dawn of the Monsters is a new kaiju beat 'em up from 13AM Games and WayForward. There aren't too many kaiju games out there, so fans of giant monster battles have something fun to dig into with this one. I'm a (very casual) kaiju fan, and of course if you're familiar with my channel, you know I love beat 'em ups and action games. So this game aligns with my tastes very well. I've had a lot of fun playing this, but I'm not sure how much a more casual beat 'em up fan would like it, because I feel like its biggest flaw is the lack of replay value. There are a LOT of different colors you can unlock (many of which are references to other characters; I recognize Ultraman, Mega Man, Spider-Man, Cell (DBZ), X-Men, Evangelion - I'd like to see people point some out in the comments!), but the grading system is very lenient, so S+ ranks are not hard to get. It's not a hard game to finish either, and there are no difficulty options to keep progressing through. So there's just not much left to do once you've collected all of the colors, other than replay your favorite missions just for the fun of it. The combat is the highlight of this game for me, and they've done a great job with it.. You've got 4 different characters to choose from, who all have different playstyles and fun combo potential to play around with. There's a pretty good amount of enemy variety, too, with most archetypes fully covered. They do a good job of mixing them up from mission to mission, and I like to cycle through the different characters in between each mission, so it never feels repetitive or gets boring for me. The art, graphics and animation are really well done too, and the story does a good job of moving you from area to area. And there's quite a bit of story; there are plenty of optional "chat" scenes you can find in the main menu that I didn't include in this video, as well as a bunch of back story and archives to read up on if you're interested. I just really hope they'll expand on this game with updates or DLC. I would especially love to see an arcade mode, with predefined stats and abilities, above all else. For me, that could elevate this game from "really good" to "great" if they nailed the balance. A survival mode could be cool too, like the one in Streets of Rage 4's Mr. X Nightmare, for example. I still like this game as-is, and it's worth the $29.99 to me, but I can understand if other people would want to wait for a bit of a discount.
