Alfred Tries To Play: Tony Meola's Sidekicks Soccer (SNES)- New York vs Miami
Who's Tony Meola? He was America's goalkeeper at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups. Not exactly Gordon Banks then, but onto the game he endorsed, which is a technically impressive effort with a Mode 7 rotating pitch giving a good impression of 3D, which must have looked amazing in 1993. However, a game's technical achievements should not be confused with the game actually being any fun and sadly this doesn't play very well. The controls aren't great, the AI is fairly thick, it's hard to score goals (trust me, I don't know how exactly I managed to score twice in this video) and the off-the-ball play is some of the worst in any football game I've ever played. With proper 3D football games having existed for a long time now, this mediocrity lies forgotten by history. A bit like Mr Meola really. But credit to this game for trying something a bit different, I can't say it's as bad as Champions World Class Soccer or World Cup Italia 90.
