As a long forgotten launch title for the Playstation 2, Wild Wild Racing is another one of those games that, for years, I have always wanted to play properly but never managed to convince myself into investing in. Until now. Having finally completed it, I can conclude that its original demo misled me. I initially believed Wild Wild Racing played like a simple, pick up and play, racer. Never could I be more wrong. For what it is worth, Rage's baja focused racer has enough variety and challenge that the actual gametime of 3-4 hours in competition can feel more like 20 hours plus if you ever want to get the most out of it. And worse, that argument would only apply to getting the unlockables and altogether besting each championship in first place. This is in no way accounting for hours lost in endless time trial repeats and perfections. Wild Wild Racing takes no prisoners in demanding you know the tracks inside out as well as the very sensitivity of the cars you handle. One false move and it is back to square one, especially given the aggressive nature of the AI. This one definitely looks like a launch game in terms of its presentation but its gameplay is as timeless as any arcade classic. That alone makes it worthy of investigating in my opinion.
