SILVERLOAD (PC DOS) (1995) - Longplay (uncommented)

SILVERLOAD is a point and click adventure game by Nova Spring and Millenium Interactive released on PC and Sony Playstation in 1995. It is set in a Wild West horror scenario. You are in control of an unnamed gunslinger who arrives in the spooky mining town Silverload. People disappear and strange things seem to happen here. You hear of devastating storms and Indian curses. While struggling to stay alive, you have to unravel the mysteries of the town and find a missing child. All in all, SILVERLOAD is a decent point and click adventure with a nice suspense atmosphere and an interesting story. However, it is dragged down by its god-awful controls, a number of annoying bugs and crude gameplay mechanics. The game is very ambitious but ultimately fails to deliver on its promises. Nevertheless, it can be entertaining if you like classic horror tales. Unfortunately, SILVERLOAD probably has the worst controls I have ever seen in an adventure game. The title uses the SIGNOS engine which often flat out refuses to work properly - sometimes resulting in the player not being able carry out certain actions (i.e. reading documents, dropping items, or selecting a hyperlink text). The PC speaker beeps that occur when selecting a hyperlink or dismissing speech bubbles are also highly annoying and totally kill the immersion. The inventory system is an absolutely confusing mess and using items has never been such a chore. You will spend a lot of time micro-managing your inventory, dropping items on the floor wherever you go just to make some room because you are overloaded. I also needed quite some time to figure out that some items are used automatically after you pick them up (i.e. trying to open a lock with a key doesn't work - you simply click on the lock with your hand). Playing SILVERLOAD on the PC is endlessly frustrating just because of the broken and unintuitive controls. It completely ruins an otherwise acceptable adventure experience. I actually had to use save states just to record the game properly. The game also features very rudimentary and sporadic action sequences in which you simply have to click on some people to shoot them dead. No arcade magic happening here. It is important to mention that the PC and Playstation versions are fundamentally different from each other. The Playstation variant is clearly the better game in every aspect. It comes with better and more atmospheric graphics, cut scenes and sounds. It also features true 3D action sequences and offers more depth when it comes to the adventure part of the game. The PC port looks amateurish and primitive in comparison. If you have the choice, I recommend you to play the PSX version.
