Гродно основан в 1128 году на реке Неман. Это один из самых древних и красивых городов Беларуси. Существует версия, что именно от слов «городить», «ограждать» и пошло название города. Есть и другое предположение, что Гродно получил свое имя от притока Немана речки Городницы (с XIX в. – Городничанка).
