Once again Cryo re-invented their Atlantis-series. For the better? Well...it's a fun, short, light-hearted experience. But gone are the mystical atmosphere and new-age score. Atlantis 3 wanted to be hip, humorous and easy-going for a broader audience. The thin story (which has almost nothing to do with Atlantis I and II) was once again written by Johan K. Robson, but he didn't touch the depths explored in his first two games. It's more of a framework for the well designed puzzles. Although the game tries to be philosophical with its Crystal Skull (which in itself is an interesting element), the subject feels unexplored and the game rushes to a not satisfactory conclusion. And while our heroine is beautiful to look at, she's extremely dull to listen to. She is modeled after French actress Chiara Mastroianni who also provided the English voice and I can't believe how blend she delivered here lines. Was she even directed by someone...? Sad to see a charming series losing its roots... After being involved in a car accident a young Egyptologist is rescued and looked after by a Tuareg. Their chance meeting is not, however, destined to last as they are each driven by a burning ambition. The Tuareg has to get acces to a well used by his people for generations, which was unjustly seized by armed men. As for the Egyptologist, her mission is to discover an ancient Egyptian site and unravel its mysteries. This, in fact, highlights one of the first strange aspects of this story, as the place she is in is located in the middle of the Algerian desert. Her exploration of the area will lead her later to a world inspired by the ancient Egyptians' Book of the Dead, but with a very strong influence. During this journey of exploration our heroine will certainly be put to the test. Will she therefore prove herself worthy of finding out what is really behind these puzzles? If she manages to get through these tests, only then will her real quest begin. An Atlantean from the era of the Pharaohs rreveals to her the existence of a very special artefact of great importance: a skull. The story known about this skull goes back to the death of King Solomon. The most valuable of all treasures, this object made it possible for the city of Jerusalem to remain free at a time when Pharaoh Shoshenq wanted to invade it. From then, it attracted the interest of the Atlanteans, who were settled in Egypt at that time due to the destruction of Atlantis. Aware that the skull was more important in the Pharaoh's eyes than Jerusalem, The Atlanteans decided to seize it an store it in a safe place, faraway from Egypt. From this period on, the skull has lain there in wait for the person who will prove that Mankind is ready to discover the ultimate power... Faced with this challenge, but also with the intention of saving the man who came to her aid when she arrived there, The Egyptologist will have to undertake a voyage of initiation through time and spirit crossing three different worlds: the Hoggar in the south of the present-day Algerian desert, Siberia during the Palaeolithic period and Baghdad from the world of the Arabian nights. Each of these represents an important aspect of the history of Mankind and its development. During these adventures, our heroine will try to find this treasure carried off by the Atlanteans and greatly sought after by all... Perhaps only then will Mankind be able to advance to a new stage in its development. (Source: Manual) === TECHNICAL NOTES The original version of this game is not sold anymore. Koalabs Studio made a compatible version for newer operating systems but they made lots of cuts and used the lower resolution graphics from the CD-ROM version. That's why I wanted to upload the original DVD-version of the game. The game was playable for me in Windows 10 but after the use of patch v.3 (to prevent a crash when starting the first conversation with the guard) my cursor and Golden Scarab in the Egyptian part disappeared. I had to change the video-settings to 32-bits to make it appear again. My Nvidia-card gave me some problems. It seems that something goes wrong with the scaling of the game when playing in 1024 x 768 pixels. Rough edges appear around characters and in cinematics. When playing in 800 x 600 pixels everything looks fine. No idea what causes it. For more info and some links to play Atlantis 3 on newer machines:
