Exodus: Journey To The Promised Land [GB] (Part 1) - Real Time Longplay
This is a, no commentary, Longplay of Exodus: Journey To The Promised Land for Game Boy. An unlicensed puzzle game developed by Wisdom Tree, one of the famous Bible games that were produced for various consoles during the 80s and 90s. No wonder why there are no complete walkthroughs; this game is brutally hard. In this video I show the first part (levels 1-50). It should be mentioned that the Game Boy version is exactly the same as the NES (apart from the color of course) which is nice. Exodus follows the story of Moses on his journey to free Israelites and lead them to Canaan. Most people are familiar with the story so I won't exlpain it further. You play as Moses and the main goal is to collect a fixed number of Mana-jars (M-jar) and 5 Question-books (Q-book) to proceed to next level. At the end of each stage you answer 5 questions and for each correct answer you get 1 Bible book (10 books = extra 1UP). There are Bible books hidden in some levels, I also show how to get most of them. Furthermore I show the correct answers for all the questions. Apart from the puzzles, each level has enemies where you have to kill or avoid. At the first stages the enemies are weak and can be killed when you speak the word of God (the w letters Moses shoots) but at later stages enemies can be killed only by falling rocks/boulders or by using the exploding stuffs/calves (limited in number). There are specific enemies that are immune to explosions or are very fast and repel w-shoots, so this adds up to difficulty. Fortunately, there are pickups to make your life easier such as holy oil to push poison blocks without getting poisoned, w-powerup to shoot more w-letters, the crown-powerup to shoot w-letters farther, the 1-, 3- and 10-pickups that add more stuffs, the shield that makes Moses invulnerable to explosions for a short time, the clock-pickup that freezes time, the sandals that let you walk through mud and the Moses-pickup that make Moses invincible to enemies. The graphics are very good for an unlicensed title; there is a static screen at the end of each level which is well-made and explains a little bit of the story. The levels themselves are also nicely done. The music however is a different story; there is only 1 in-game track the repeats over and over, and we are talking for 100 levels...are you serious guys? The gameplay is very solid as Moses movement is smooth and accurate. I have to warn though that Exodus is one of the hardest games I have played so far. It requires great memory to solve all puzzles, patience to complete all 100 levels, speed as levels have time limit and sharp reflexes to avoid enemies and falling rocks. Luck is also a parameter as there are stages where blocks respawn randomly and can trap Moses with no escape. So basically you need to be a complete gamer to make it through. At this point, I have to mention some drawbacks: 1) Biggest flaw; there is a great fps loss when many enemies/objects are moving making it unplayable (better optimization needed). 2) Levels 51-100 are a reversed version of levels 1-50 with more enemies, stricter time limit etc. so you play the game 2 times which makes it repetitive. 3) Due to small Game Boy screen, viewing distance is drastically limited making it very hard to avoid enemies and obstacles. 4) The ending is pathetic; you pass all this torture just to get a text message. 5) There is no password meaning that you have to finish all levels at once (more than 6 hours of playtime). Spoiler: It is possible to start at level 81 if you keep pressing the B button at the level number screen. In short, Exodus is a very addictive title with great puzzles and many levels to keep you busy. Pitty the severe drawbacks (mainly fps drop) and extreme difficulty will discourage most people. If you like puzzle games and/or challenges I highly recommend to give it a try. Obviously a no death run is impossible for such a hardcore game so I'm glad I finished it with only 20 deaths.
