Enemy Engaged Apache Havoc was developed by Razorworks (former developers of F-16 Combat Pilot, Longbow Apache and Hind from Digital Integration) and published by Empire Interactive in 1998 for Windows. It was re-released digitally on GOG where it's still available to buy dirt cheap. Game featured 2 flyable helicopters from 2 sides of the conflict - AH-64D Apache Longbow and Mi-28N Havoc-B. There were 3 flashpoint zones - Georgia, Cuba and the "Golden Triangle" (Thailand, Laos and Myanmar). You can enjoy Free Flight mode as well as get into more serious Dynamic Missions or embark on full Dynamic Campaign. Environment is also dynamic - you have full day/night cycle, weather changes which can make some of your sensors and weapons unusable (FLIR and laser Hellfires in bad weather, or DVO and DTV at night). To combat that pesky rain you can make use of your windshield wipers! Flight model was really advanced for the time - it modelled autorotations, retreating blade stall, ground effect and even vortex ring state, which can be read about in nicely written manual. You can see that the guys from DI Longbow Apache team worked on this one when you sit in your Apache - the avionics take few good gameplay ideas from LA - like target priority filter for your ground radar which will quickly thinn those clutter radar returns revealing only highest priority threats if you choose to. You can loft your Hellfires with LOAL mode or fire directly in LOBL mode. Some of the other useful features like Priority Fire Zones (first appeared in Jane's Longbow) were not modelled, though they were later added by modders, when the EECH (sequel) source code was released. Speaking of sequel and mods - when you installed Comanche Hokum and pointed to the installation location of your Apache Havoc, you could use all the content from AH in CH. On top of that there is big community of modders constantly updating the CH game. Adding new terrains, flyable choppers, improving graphics and adding new features. Here's the site for CH mods: Note that the GOG version of CH is not vanilla - it's patched with 1.11.1 version of allMods patch. In this video I showcase the first mission from dynamic campaign set in Georgia (for all you DCS fans out there). It's simple recon task, which I spice up a little by engaging enemy FARP that I located at the end of my planned route. On my way back I was cought by detoriating weather conditions. Weather is not global, it's localized, so you can have bad showers in one spot while few km away enemy platoon is sunbathing. If you want to get it working - pick GOG version - it's already patched up with latest official patch. After installation, remove any compatibility options from the \Apache vs Havoc\Aphavoc\aphavoc.exe and use dgVoodoo2 as a DirectX wrapper: put the dlls from dgVoodoo2 folder \MS\x86\ into the game folder next to aphavoc.exe With dgVoodoo you can use higher resolutions than originally available in the game. #RetroFlightSims
