Yogi Bear & Friends in the Greed Monster Longplay (C64) [50 FPS]
Developed by Twilight and published by Hi-Tec Software in 1990. The game offers a completely different experience to the previous titles starring Yogi and is perhaps the best of the bunch. Having been alerted to the fact that all the toys in the world have gone missing, Yogi's Treasure Hunters are sent on a mission to discover what has happened to them. However, all of Yogi's friends end up being captured by the so-called Greed Monster and it's up to Yogi to rescue them. The game world is viewed from a top-down perspective and is a maze/treasure hunt game where Yogi must find different coloured keys to unlock doors that bar progress and act as prison cells for his friends. In addition to rescuing his colleagues, Yogi must collect all of the coins (grey spheres) that he comes across. According to the game's manual, this will "turn someone else into the Greed Monster thus turning Nathan back to normal and giving you access to the toy machine". This always puzzled me as I have no idea who Nathan is and the fact that "someone else" will end up as the Greed Monster doesn't sound like a particularly pleasant outcome. Each of the screens is guarded by a variety of enemies, most of which will home in on Yogi and sap his energy bar. Losing all of your energy results in the controls being reversed for a short period of time whilst you must locate a picnic basket with which to restore lost energy. If Yogi fails to find a basket in time, the game ends. Yogi is armed with a jar of sweets and these can be thrown at enemies to temporarily knock them back, or even stun them. In reality, the sweets have little effect on the critters and it's much more effective to simply avoid them than to hurl sweets. The exception to this is the occasional screen where enemies must be shot to make them move, providing safe passage for Yogi to proceed. The game isn't very long and the world doesn't take long to map. However, it did take me a while to work out how to fill the hole in the floor on the way to the Greed Monster's room and resulted in a bit of wandering towards the end of the video. I think the required item was the strange, grey-coloured burger-shaped object, but I can't be sure! Yogi Bear and the Greed Monster is a reasonably fun game, if short game with some attractively drawn and coloured graphics. There is a single tune within the game that treads a fine line between catchy and monotonous. Considering that the production values were fairly high for a budget title, the game offers a decent, if short-lived experience. #retrogaming
