In the Torah portion Acharei Mot, we learn that sins of immorality are punished everywhere, but in the Land of Israel they are judged most severely. The holiness of this land cannot tolerate corruption — and sinners are expelled from it. The Midrash gives examples: the Flood in the days of Noah, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the lions sent against the idolaters brought by the Assyrian king. This lesson reminds us that our survival in the Land of Israel depends not on the army or economy, but on holiness, purity, and faithfulness to the Torah.
